Supported Independent Living: Helping People Live Life on Their Own Terms

Supported independent living is all about empowering people with disability to live as independently as possible, while still having access to the support they need. It’s a model that blends freedom and assistance, giving individuals greater choice and control over their daily lives, while ensuring they’re not navigating things on their own.

In Australia, supported independent living (SIL) is funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and is designed for people who require help with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, personal care and managing routines. But it’s about far more than just practical support—it’s about dignity, autonomy and creating a home environment that reflects each person’s unique needs and preferences.

What Does Supported Independent Living Look Like?

SIL typically involves living in a shared home with one or more housemates who also receive support, though some individuals may live on their own. A support team is usually on-site or on-call 24/7, depending on the level of care needed. Our professionals help with everyday tasks, provide companionship and support residents to engage in community life.

Importantly, residents have the freedom to make decisions about their lifestyle—what they eat, when they go out, how they decorate their rooms and how they spend their time. This approach helps foster life skills, build confidence and improve overall wellbeing.

Who Can Access SIL?

SIL is suited to people aged 18 and over who have significant and ongoing support needs due to a disability. Eligibility is determined by the NDIS, based on a person’s individual goals, preferences and level of functional capacity.

Support needs might include help with personal care, medication management, emotional regulation or daily household activities. The aim is to strike the right balance between support and independence, helping individuals achieve their personal goals in a safe and supportive environment.
